A Cold February Morning in Piedmont

The first time we visited the vineyard in Piedmont, something struck us right away. It was a cold February morning, but the landscape glowed in the sunlight — rolling green hills with small villages crowning each ridge. And in the middle of it all lay Paolo's estate, the first certified organic vineyard in the Nizza area.

Why this vineyard?

When we arrived, Paolo showed us around himself and let us taste some of the wines he made — Barbera d'Asti and Nizza DOCG. We quickly understood that this was about more than the wine in the glass: Paolo shared our values of sustainable, organic farming. The wines were full-bodied, complex and lightly spiced — but what mattered most was that he farmed organically, just as we have done on our own farm in Inderøy.

Our background: from Norwegian farming to Italian vineyards

Marit and I run Nersalberg in Inderøy, a farm that has been in Marit's family for generations. We took it over in 2012 and converted to organic in 2016. The idea was always to care for the soil so it can give us — and future generations — the best it has to offer. When we came across this vineyard, the pieces fell into place: here we could bring Norwegian organic thinking together with a world-class Italian wine tradition.

A friendship that ties it all together

Today we work side by side with Paolo, who is still part of the operation and shares his knowledge. We would not have made this big transition without his experience, especially in the early days. He knows everything there is to know about getting the most out of Barbera grapes — and the fact that he's just as passionate about sustainability makes it all the more enjoyable

From Inderøy to Piedmont — and back again

We don't plan to move to Italy full time (yet!), but we'll be travelling down often. The farm in Inderøy remains the heart of it all, while Cascina VerdeVios has become a natural extension of the life we live at home: a new setting for making good things with care — for nature and for the people who enjoy them.

Looking ahead

There are many plans. We make our wine from a fifth of the vineyard, choosing the grapes carefully each season. One day we may also open holiday apartments here in Piedmont, so that more people can experience the charm of staying among the vines

Sustainability and taste, hand in hand

Even though the dream of a vineyard has come true, we hold on to the same philosophy we've always had: everything we grow and make should benefit both nature and people. For us, quality and sustainability go hand in hand. We look forward to carrying on this organic legacy and sharing both the wines and farm life with you.
